Jacques Tourneur‘s 1942 classic “Cat People” now famously produced by Val Lewton (Thank you Martin Scorsese). The themes were a bit bold for a movie in the heart of the code days, with lovely lead Simone Simon playing a woman who turns into a black panther that devours her mate when sexually aroused. Shot on a tight budget with cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca, they used the shadows and darkness to create an amazing amount of tension and scares. So much so that the stalking scene is listed as one of Bravo’s 100 Scariest Movie Moments. A lesson in restraint for all filmmakers. The team of Tourneur/Musuraca not only helped redefine horror movies, but they did the same for Noir when they would team up again for the brilliant “Out of the Past“.
