Horror Movies for October # 6

Tod Browning makes a return appearance with his 1932 cult classic “Freaks“. If you are chomping at the bit to see American Horror Story’s “Freak Show” this Wednesday, then you owe it to yourself to see “Freaks” whose cast is made up entirely of actual carnival sideshow workers. Browning’s film was so controversial and shocking at the time that they shot a different ending. The DVD’s available now have some of the original footage but the scenes, like the fate of Hercules is thought to be lost forever. Hint, he could sing “Ave Maria” for me and it would work. “Freaks”, like any great horror movie shows that the real ugliness in humanity is not in the sideshow freaks, but those who believe they are normal. But they are not. They, too, are one of us.
